BIOFLORIDA ANNOUNCES NEW AWARDS CEREMONY AT 12TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE

NOVEMBER 4 – 6, 2009 AT THE JW MARRIOTT ORLANDO, GRANDE LAKES

AWARDS HONOR TWO PIONEERS OF THE LIFE SCIENCE INDUSTRY

West Palm Beach, Fla. (July  1, 2009) — BioFlorida, Florida’s statewide association for the bioscience industry, announces a new awards ceremony at BioFlorida’s 12th Annual Conference taking place November 4 – 6, 2009 at the JW Marriott Orlando, Grande Lakes, Orlando, FL. The conference is the state’s largest gathering of life science professionals, and attendance is expected to reach more than 400 business and scientific leaders from all sectors of the industry.

New this year, the annual conference will honor two founding members and past chairmen of BioFlorida, Weaver Gaines and David Gury, with the creation of The Gaines Award and The Gury Award. Gaines and Gury have created and managed biotechnology companies that fostered the industry’s growth and continue to serve as advocates and leaders in Florida’s bioscience community.  The awards will recognize individuals and businesses for their contributions to upholding their legacy.

“Both of these well-respected individuals paved the way for Florida’s bioscience foundation. What these two men did was monumental. Their efforts took a decade of true dedication – pounding the pavement, knocking on doors and making phone calls – to convince Florida’s leaders that life sciences can be an important economic driver for the state of Florida,” said Tom McLain, BioFlorida’s Chairman of the Board and CEO, Claro Scientific. “Gaines and Gury were relentless with their pursuit of leading this charge.”

“Florida’s industry owes a lot to these two visionaries,” said Russell Allen, President and CEO of BioFlorida. “Their leadership has inspired many scientists and business leaders in this industry, and these awards will reflect that inspiration.”

The Awards

BioFlorida will award two winners The Gaines Award and The Gury Award at the 12th Annual Conference.  Award winners will be selected by a panel of industry leaders. The Gaines Award will honor an individual who has made extraordinary contributions to the growth of Florida’s life sciences industry.  The Gury Award will honor a company that has achieved significant technology advancements or product development milestones and/or has made substantial contributions to the advancement of Florida’s bioscience industry.
